I arrived early at the branch for work so I started playing around with the picture styles on the Canon digital camera. I experimented with the contrast and sharpness settings to see how much they affect the image. I must have looked like an undercover cop sitting in the car with the camera. I noticed this girl (all in the name of photography Wendy I swear) wandering around in front of some shops. She lit up a cigarette and paced back and forth. I managed to take this shot where she stood in the sunlight which shifts the attention directly to her. If you look closely, you'll also notice she has a very uneasy pose. I'm wanting to tell more of a story from my images and I think this one manages to do that... whatever that story may be.

This composition is played out countless times every day as people seek a place to smoke where they won't encounter the wrath of nonsmokers. The girl does not seem relaxed in the shot. Rather she appears to be imbibing her nicotine quota in circumstances dictated by the smoking laws and that adds to the photo story. Capturing the shot as the sun shone on the subject is clever, as is the spiky plant on the left. After all smoking is a thorny issue. Street photography is about being quick to see the shot and to take the image and this shot achieves that well. There are two issues to consider. One is the extent of black in the foreground. Could the image be improved by cropping the foreground? The other is the placement of the down pipe behind the subject. Signs near subjects can be distracting but I think the sign in this shot reminds the viewer that we are looking at a street scene and not someone's backyard - it helps to tell the story and it is in the shadow which draws attention away from it. The image reminds me that it would be interesting to do a series of street smokers.
